Each September is National Preparedness Month and this means that it's time to take a look at any items that have been packed away as part of a survival kit to make sure that they're still in working order and that any sealed containers have not passed their expiration date. A survival kit is generally rated to last a few years, but additions of canned food and batteries usually need replacing on an occasional basis. It would be a shame to put a lot of effort into a survival kit only to have it become unusable during a real emergency.
